Rowling, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Harry Potter. Mentally, Ed crossed his fingers. Spyro let out a rawl , indignation plain. His friend sighed quietly. Mio nipotes were able to understand Italian perfectly even without being able to speak so much as a word of it.
The older woman stilled and wet her lips as her gaze darted around the group of officers. All of you? The blonde stilled. She eyed the dragon for an instant longer, then sighed. There are some older books that might have care and feeding instructions in them. No dragon could harm their Dragonlord. Greg stiffened, his sixth sense on full alert. Mentally, he reached for his gryphon ability to see magic and summoned it up.
Rather than turning scarlet, the magical hue dappled his eyes, intermixing with his hazel irises. Spyro cocked his head to the side. He was little? Deliberately, Greg assumed a protective stance and spoke in Narnian, his words sharp. Behind him, Spike froze at the declaration and Greg could sense the moment his constable started fighting. Not against his teammates, but against the draconic power attempting to penetrate his magical core.
Hazel narrowed, hardening into topaz, though Greg kept his seething magic in check. Topaz narrowed another hair. The purple dragon cringed away, whimpers growing louder as he sank down on his belly. Had a Dragonlord. A sharp gesture kept his officers quiet. Parker was tempted to argue back that the dragon had tried to take his constable, but throttled that urge in favor of sorting through what facts they had.
Fact: Spike had inadvertently slipped into the dragon language and named Spyro, thus hatching the Old Dragon. But what had caused the bond? The hatching? Or something else? Greg turned towards his bomb tech with a querying gaze. With a shiver, Spike forced his eyes back up. Still, much as he wanted to offer sympathy to little Spyro, he could not, would not risk his constable.
For a minute, the lieutenant debated the alternatives, then nodded to himself. Not if Spyro was really an Old Dragon. No, the best source for information was…. You and I will take our friend here over to Gringotts.
One man down on a six-man team is pushing it and we need you here anyway. Best to keep them physically apart for the moment. Being a member of a family that held the status of Goblin-Friend did occasionally come in handy. It especially came in handy when trying to sneak a baby dragon through Wizarding Toronto without anyone seeing said dragon; Parker and Scarlatti were able to bypass the mall altogether by using a Floo address reserved for the Calvin family.
Even better, as soon as the goblins got a gander at Spyro, they escorted the two men straight to Silnok without so much as a sneer. The goblin frowned as the tale unfolded, examining the purple dragon closely. The examination lasted longer than the story and Silnok even produced several items from his desk as he inspected the dragon with a magnifying glass and a number of esoteric instruments. The goblin hummed thoughtfully to himself as he worked and when he was done, there was a curious gleam in his dark eyes.
He gestured both of his guests to seats and moved to his own chair, interlacing his long, bony fingers. When both men were seated, he began. I can clearly detect that a link existed between Auror Scarlatti and the young dragon here, one that was broken but an hour ago. Greg sighed heavily, putting the pieces together.
Silnok grunted. An Animagus form requires more magic than the average Squib boasts. He is incapable of providing enough magic for a young dragon; I should say the same is true for any of your number, save, perhaps, your charges. The goblin inclined his head. Our knowledge is incomplete, but what lore we do possess indicates that young dragons were often reared by Dragonlords for a period of time after their hatching.
How long that period is, we do not know, but we believe that period was necessary for a young dragon to develop speech, fire, and flight. Once the core had grown to a stable point, the young dragons would depart their Dragonlords and venture forth into the wild. Old Dragons were expected to quest and roam for much of their young lives. Elder dragons tended to remain near magical settlements, but even they continued to roam. It was their nature.
Pausing, Silnok considered, then continued. However, unlike all her kin, she was hatched after the Purge and her Dragonlord knew very little of his role as a Dragonlord. We know from Emrys that she did eventually develop her ability to breathe fire, but as far as he knows, she did not speak prior to Camlann.
Her reasons are her own and her eggs remain lost to this very day. Greg sighed heavily and gestured to Spyro. Should he remain as he is, his growth will be stunted and his magic prone to corruption. His only priority will be the dragon in his care and I find it likely that his magical core will run dry long before the dragon can grow to independence.
Spike shivered hard as Silnok nodded gravely. Greg refused to let go. Suddenly, he was regretting letting Spike stay anywhere near Spyro. The bomb tech growled, a feral gleam in his eyes, and stood, bringing both hands down to grab Spyro. In one motion, Spike pulled the dragon close to his chest, enfolding the little beast with his arms. Disbelief surged; the link that Aslan Himself had promised could never break…had just broken.
Greg held his position as he rose to his feet and spread his hands, praying that their Spike was still in there somewhere. The raven head shook violently. Parker refused to flinch at the verbal assault. Lou, your best friend. What do you want me to tell him when I come back without you? Emerald and purple intensified, as if battling each other for control, and Spike began to tremble.
He still clung to Spyro, but tears leaked out of his eyes as his gaze dropped. You were ours before this dragon egg ever crossed your line of sight. Not for an instant. Greg ignored the chairs in favor of sinking down on the ground, letting Spike tremble in his grasp. Unless…unless Spike had willingly permitted the tampering….
Breath coming in short pants, Spike nodded against his chest. The magic would want to go back to what it was used to. Gripping his power, Greg reached not for the link, but for his sense of Spike. That link was a lie, a trick to keep him away from his own , but the true link was still there if only he could find it. You cannot have my friend. The same desperation that had taken over Spike, even after the initial bond between himself and the dragon had been severed.
Well, dang and blast. Apparently, Team One had a new member after all. A newborn dragon that was tied to all of them for however long it took him to grow up.
Parker shook his head. Spike shivered violently and stared down at the stone floor. The constable flinched and nodded guiltily. The account manager bowed ever so slightly. Simple, but effective. And, of course, seven is a very magical number. Parker waved the explanation to a halt and focused on his trembling constable. How am I doing? Parker swallowed down the groan that wanted to emerge as he made his way back to his feet. A stone floor was not something his still recovering body enjoyed. Come to think of it, a stone floor was uncomfortable anyway.
One eyebrow cocked at Silnok. When Parker eyed him in some concern, the bomb tech ducked his head and rubbed at his neck with his free hand. I cannot tell you how long an average Old Dragon takes to reach adulthood, although modern dragons mature very swiftly indeed. Nor can I speculate on how an Old Dragon without a true Dragonlord might be affected in his growth.
In the meantime, as I have confirmed that the young dragon is indeed an Old Dragon, he falls under the auspices of a vault Emrys set aside for the restoration of the Old Dragons. If you would provide me with receipts for anything you have purchased for the dragon, I will reimburse you and see to it that you are sent a technological debit card linked to the Old Dragon vault by the end of today.
Spike passed the slumbering purple dragon over to his boss and dug out a single receipt; Greg caught a glimpse of the total and mentally winced. A sheen of magical light appeared around the dragon; it was mostly purple, but in amongst the dominating hue, Greg saw flickers and flashes of seven other colors, each of them matching to himself or a member of Team One. Silnok frowned. The dragon is not truly one of your own, though his magic has certainly latched onto the links you share with your own.
Parker lifted a hand. The goblin subtly relaxed. Greg shot an evil smirk back at his constable. A good account manager is hard to find. The shivers got worse when the purple dragon shifted and let out a complaining noise — and Parker automatically pulled the animal closer. Spike had taken Spyro back by the time he and Sarge returned to the barn.
Inside, he shuddered, wondering how his teammates would react — did they even know what had almost happened? Had they been aware of Spyro latching onto their magic; Sarge had been aware, but Sarge had been right there when it happened.
Inside his head, the events played out once more, the obsession that had taken hold, overriding logic and sweeping aside his friendships. As if they were nothing , so long as the purple menace in his arms got what he needed.
Not to that, at any rate, but Spike knew darn good and well that he was being influenced and so was Sarge. Inside the barn, Sarge paused by the dispatcher desk to speak to Winnie, then gestured Spike towards the briefing room.
Now he knew exactly how Sarge had felt about the links and magical orders. Fresh guilt surged. The bomb tech froze, unable to lever the words out of his gut. Sarge gripped his shoulder briefly, then faced their teammates. Sarge let out a heavy sigh. The lieutenant heaved another sigh. What had he done? Sarge considered that, then nodded sharply. Ed snorted derision and reached down to pull one of the books over.
That much alcohol, the dragons were probably so drunk, they woulda roasted anything. If dragons were largely illegal in the magical world — and had been for centuries — then why would a British lord know anything about them?
The officers shifted to let the new arrivals in and include them in the conversation. Onasi shrugged. Sam whistled low, but all of them were impressed. To get hired right out of school was no mean feat, regardless of world. The noise finally woke Spyro up and the purple dragon rumbled as he stirred and lifted his head to regard the newcomers grumpily. Spike winced internally. Silnok had been even better than his word and he already had the debit card for the Old Dragon vault in hand, but they were still trying to figure out what he was supposed to feed the baby dragon.
